Our Purpose

The school was opened in 1862 by Rt. Rev William Higgin; MA DD Lord Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, who was also a Commissioner for National Education.The Model Schools in Ireland were set up and controlled by the Commissioners of National Education and were established essentially as ‘models' for all in the National  Schools System.  Their buildings and equipment were superior and all salaries were paid by the State. 

The Model Schools besides setting and achieving high educational standards for their pupils, provided for the early training of teachers. Following partition, responsibility for the Londonderry Model Primary School passed to the Borough Council in 1929 and later in 1973, after local government reorganisation, the Western Education and Library Board became the controlling authority. 

In 1938 the original school building was replaced and a more extensive Model School was developed on the mature site. In the intervening years to the present, the school has witnessed several major educational challenges including those presented by the 1947 Butler Act and most recently, the Education Reform Order NI 1989. The school has responded by continually seeking to provide excellent opportunities for each pupil's academic, social and moral development.

 
 
 

Vision

In the Model Primary School we believe that all children, teachers, staff, governors and parents form the members of our school community. We work in partnership with one another to make our learning environment one in which the children entrusted to the school's care will find an atmosphere of learning which will develop each pupil to its full potential.

We believe that all pupils and staff are entitled to a caring, supportive and learning environment.

We believe that all children are unique.  Each child develops in an individual way and all those entrusted to the education of the child will endeavour to help, assist, nurture and support each one to achieve its potential.

We believe in high expectations and expect them from pupils, staff, parents and the wider school community.

We aim to

  • Support the development of each child intellectually, emotionally, physically, socially, spiritually and creatively.
  • Encourage a sense of responsibility in each child and promote self-discipline, courtesy and consideration for others.
  • Collaborate and cooperate in a partnership with parents to support the development of each child.
  • Praise all achievements of pupils as we believe the raising of self esteem leads to a positive self-image which leads of mutual self respect and understanding.

We realise that the school of the 21st century is forever changing and we will be responsive to new developments and advances in education which will lay sound foundations for each individual's growth, development and education and lead to their fullest participation in the world of the 21st century as informed, creative people, capable of making informed choices and decisions.

Status

The Model School is a controlled Educational Primary school administered by a Board of Governors, who are representatives of the Department of Education, Western Education and Library Board, Trustees, Parents and Teaching Staff.  They are responsible for the legal and financial affairs of the school.
